5 Must-See Events at Indian Summer Festival

By Jive PR + Digital on June 27, 2017

Indian Summer Festival is back again this year and ready to takeover Vancouver with ten days of engaging events that will spark conversation and inspire imagination! From industry leaders in music, publishing, cuisine, and visual arts, #ISF2017 brings together international change-makers with stories to tell.

Here are our five picks for must-see events at this year’s festival:

Opening Gala

It’s been dubbed one of Vancouver’s hottest summer parties and for good reason! Curated by local chef Vikram Vij (co-owner of Vijs, Rangoli and My Shanti), the Opening Gala brings together world-class cuisine, live entertainment and great company.

Enjoy dishes sprung from the creative minds behind some of Vancouver’s best restaurants including Blue Water Cafe, Cafe Medina and Jamjar –– just to name a few! Groove to the smooth sounds spun by local DJ Rup Sidhu, and mingle with arts and culture enthusiasts from across the city. It’s a fun-filled evening that’s not to be missed!

Here is Where We Meet: L. Subramaniam and Ernie Watts

Revered jazz saxophonist Ernie Watts and classical Indian violinist L. Subramaniam, India’s ‘Emperor of Sound,’ will combine forces for a special concert at the Orpheum Theatre on July 8. Rarely performed, the concert showcases the Grammy award-winning talents of these two maestros accompanied by an outstanding roster of international musicians. Sit back, relax and get ready to take in a concert unlike any you’ve seen before.

Graphically Speaking

Let’s talk art in times of conflict. Graphically Speaking discusses the role that the artist plays in times of global tension with graphic artist Joe Sacco and illustrative journalist Molly Crabapple.

Crabapple has covered tough stories such as America’s war on drugs, Guantanamo Bay, and the war zones of Syria through illustration. While Sacco’s work has used cartoons to explore such emotionally charged issues as the relations between Israel and Palestine, and the Bosnian war. Both join award-winning Indian novelist Raghu Karnad on stage for what is sure to be a compelling evening.

I See the Promise Land

A master storyteller, oral historian, and talented singer, Arthur Flowers is aptly known as a ‘literary bluesman.’ Hailing from Memphis, Tennessee, Flowers weaves literature, poetry, myth, history, and magical realism into oral epics that leave audiences spellbound. You’ve never seen anything like it, so you won’t want to miss it.

Closing Party: 5×15 and Constellations

Although the Closing Party signals the end of another festival season, it does so in style! First, enjoy the 5×15 speakers series, where five speakers are each given 15 minutes to share a topic they are passionate about. The series, which originated in London, England, is known to produce engaging talks that spark conversation and inspire action. This year’s speakers include Canadian rock icon Bif Naked, former revolutionary Carmen Rodriguez, and musical pioneer Talvin Singh among others.

As if this wasn’t enough, 5×15 is followed by the Constellations afterparty. Here the celebration is really kicked into high gear and guests are invited to dance the night away to a DJ set headlined by Talvin Singh himself!
