Introducing Idea Pins — Pinterest’s rebrand of the Story Pin, which now offers additional editing tools and allows creators to produce more actionable and saveable content. Pinterest wants to empower creators to share content on their platform and have listened to the demand to include short-form video content options on the platform, similar to TikTok and Reels. Pinners will now be able to see the process it takes to get the end result of the recipes and inspiration they were searching for before. With new editing features like voice-over recording, music selection, and topic tagging, creators are able to produce content promoting more engagement than ever before.
The addition of short-form video also introduces another new feature from Pinterest called ‘Takes’. When you post an Idea Pin, you can allow Pinners to add their own ‘take’ to your content similar to stitching on TikTok.
In terms of discovery on Pinterest, it’s split into the ‘Browse’ tab, which is the traditional stream of pins on your feed, and the ‘Watch’ tab, which is switching to a more TikTok style of videos and still images that are showcased in the same vertical scrolling stream of content. However, instead of two columns of pins like on the ‘Browse’ tab, it only focuses on one video or picture at a time. Pinterest is also rolling out the Creator Rewards program in 2022, which lets creators participate in challenges and idea prompts based on what is currently trending to receive money from Pinterest. For instance, some of the challenges that Pinterest will run will be like “Share a slice of fall,” as shown in the image below.
Pinterest is also adopting new augmented reality technology through their Try-On stickers with Idea Pins, which is where only approved creators can tag over 10,000 Try-On enabled products in their posts with the new sticker. This means that Pinners will soon be able to virtually try on a lipstick that their favourite creator has tagged in their Idea Pin. This is extremely revolutionary in terms of eCommerce because it makes it so much easier for users to find products that are being recommended by influencers and try them out.
In addition, Pinterest is becoming more transparent and promoting authenticity for their creators, as they will be able to highlight their branded content on their Idea Pins with a ‘paid partnership’ label. Creators will also receive commission when their audience members purchase products from their sponsored pins.
With all the new features coming in the new year, Pinterest is really spicing it up for their creators and pinners, from the Idea Pins to the virtual Try-On stickers. Pinterest is becoming a mighty force in the eCommerce industry and how creators are able to monetize their creations but also to have fun with their ideas and share them with their audience.
