We Have The Deets On Fleets

Twitter’s disappearing tweets are here — introducing ‘Fleets’

Your ‘fleeting’ thoughts or drafts now have somewhere to live without the pressure of likes or retweets. Twitter announced the global launch of ‘Fleets’ on Tuesday after testing select markets since March. According to Twitter’s announcement, “Fleets are for sharing momentary thoughts – they help start conversations and only stick around for 24 hours.”

How does it work?

Simply put, Fleets is a Stories rollout for Twitter. To share a tweet in a Fleet, you tap the ‘Share’ icon at the bottom of the tweet and then tap ‘Share in Fleet’. To create a new Fleet, tap your profile image in the Twitter app, then select ‘View Fleets’ to add a new one.

You can Fleet text, reactions to Tweets, photos, or videos and customize your Fleets with various background and text options. You can also respond to others’ fleets by tapping on one and sending a direct message or emoji to the creator, which will start a DM conversation similar to how the story reply process works on Instagram.

What does it mean for brands?

Twitter is hoping to increase user engagement with the addition of Fleets, working to lower the pressure of perfected tweets. Similarly, how the launch of Instagram stories increased a less curated content stream.

However, it’s a little too early to tell if brands should push their efforts to Fleets as much as Instagram stories at this time. This all depends on how well received the new feature is and how often they use it.
