What is user-generated content? And why brands should use it.

While influencer marketing is still an effective way to reach your target audience, people are wanting to see less picture-perfect content. This could be in the form of a video ad or static pictures.

Now, what is User Generated Content (UGC)? User-generated content (UGC) is any type of content created by people instead of brands – this includes pictures, videos, text and audio.

Because the content is retrieved from people outside of the brand itself, it brings a sense of authenticity and trust. People get to see “real” people use the brand and are seeing someone like them using a product they are potentially interested in buying.

So how do you get user-generated content? You can push people to tag and post your products on social media by simply mentioning it in your bio. Just make sure to have a brand-specific hashtag. It will make it easier to find that content and build a community. When you see a picture you like, you can simply ask them if you are allowed to re-post it on your social.

Another method that has been popularized in recent months, is simply hiring UGC creators. They are not like your typical influencer because unlike them they do not have a following. They simply create content for brands to use. And yes that includes those famous TikTok ads you see. 

Before completely writing that option off, many brands have seen a lot of success by hiring UGC creators.

Is it sad that even authentic content is manufactured? Not necessarily, this just means that brands are giving consumers what they are asking for.
